The answers to today’s Connections game, #434, are…

  • YELLOW: ALARM BUTTONS SET ALARM, HOUR, SNOOZE, TIME
  • GREEN: “HERE’S A THOUGHT…” MAYBE, IMAGINE, SUPPOSE, WHAT IF
  • BLUE: CANDY PIECES KISS, NERD, RUNT, WOPPER
  • PURPLE: SEVEN DWARFS MINUS LAST LETTER DO, DOPE, GRUMP, SLEEP

  • My rating: Difficult
  • My score: Failure

It’s been ages since I haven’t solved a Connections puzzle, but that happened to me today – and I suspect it could happen to others too. That said, the blue group, CANDY PIECES, might be a lot easier to solve if you’re in the US. I live in the UK and have never heard of WHOPPER or RUNT in that context. I have heard of NERDs and KISSes, but neither are particularly common here and the connection never occurred to me.

As for purple, the SEVEN DWARFS MINUS LAST LETTER, I can only compliment the NYT on a clever puzzle that I could have solved myself, but which was simply too clever for me.

How did it go today? Send me an email and let me know.

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games from the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a bit harder, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don’t technically have to solve the last question, because you can answer it by elimination. Plus, you can make a maximum of four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.

It is a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can obscure the answers.

It is free to play via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
