NYT Connections Today (Contest #413) – The Answers
The answers to today’s Connections game, #413, are…
- YELLOW: PARTS OF A BOOK COVER, COVER, PAGE, SPINE
- GREEN: CAT COAT PATTERNS CALICO, TABBY, TORTOISE, TUXEDO
- BLUE: NERVOUSNESS, IN THE SINGULAR BUTTERFLY, TEARS, NERVE, WILLY
- PURPLE: STARTING WITH VEGETABLES BEETHOVEN, CORNUCOPIA, KALEIDOSCOPE, PEACOCK
- My score: Difficult
- My score: 1 error
The last purple group in today’s game is one of my favorite types of Connections puzzles: the hidden word. In this case, it was vegetables at the beginning of other words, for example CORN in CORNUCOPIA and PEA in PEACOCK. Clever, huh?
Yeah, but it took me a while to see it. Okay, it took me a while to see it. ages to spot it. The problem was that I had to find it – because the blue group, ‘NERVOUSNESS, IN THE SINGULAR’, was also completely out of my reach. In hindsight, I should have spotted that one, and indeed my daughter – who was helping me today – said something along the lines of “Dad, JITTER and NERVE go together!” To which I replied that NERVE was the wrong tense, it’s not nervous, it’s nerveas in the body. But I was completely wrong, taken aback by the NYT’s decision to make the answers singular. What an idiot. If my daughter reads this, I’ll listen to you next time.
How was your day? Send me an email and let me know.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games from the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a bit harder, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don’t technically have to solve the last question, because you can answer it by elimination. Plus, you can make a maximum of four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It is a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can obscure the answers.
It is free to play via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
