NYT Connections Today (Game #518) – The Answers
The answers to today’s Connections game, game #518, are…
- YELLOW: Barrel-shaped container CASK, CYLINDER, DRUM, TANK
- GREEN: GUIDE PILOT, SHEPHERD, STEERING, USHER
- BLUE: NFL TEAM MEMBER COWBOY, JET, RAM, RAVEN
- PURPLE: THINGS THAT SWING GOLFER, CANDLE, SALOON DOORS, SWING
- My rating: Simple
- My score: Perfect
I can’t help but think it’s a bit of a NYT cop to include the word SWING in a group where the answer is, um, SWING. I mean, come on! This was also the purple group, so probably the most difficult of the four.
Admittedly, the others were even easier. Blue – the second strongest – was a member of the NFL TEAM, and even a British football/cricket fan like me could see that COWBOY, JET, RAM and RAVEN were the answers. Green, meanwhile, simply consisted of four things that were all COMPLETE CONTAINERS: CASK, CYLINDER, DRUM and TANK. My finger hovered over the send button, thinking it couldn’t possibly be that simple. But it was, and for once I finished this game without trauma.
How did you do today? Send me an email and let me know.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the New York Times’ increasingly popular word games. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is often quite tough, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you technically don’t have to solve the last question because you can answer it by a process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It’s a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, beware of homophones and other word games that can obscure the answers.
It is playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
