NYT Connections Today (Contest #466) – The Answers
The answers to today’s Connections game, #466, are…
- YELLOW: PREFIX MEANS “WELL” EXTRA, HYPER, OVER, SUPER
- GREEN: TYPES OF PARTIES BIRTHDAY, COCKTAIL, DINNER, SURPRISE
- BLUE: PBS PROGRAMS FRONTLINE, MASTERPIECE, NATURE, NOVA
- PURPLE: PLACES IN FRANCE ANGERS, CHAMPAGNE, NICE, REUNION
- My rating: Moderate
- My score: Perfect
Today’s Connections really got my brain working – which I think is the point. Green – TYPES OF PARTY – wasn’t hard, with BIRTHDAY, COCKTAIL, DINNER and SURPRISE standing out, but I found yellow and blue harder. The problem was largely one of misdirection, with NOVA and SUPER and HYPER all sounding like they might go together, but in the end I went with the PREFIX MEANING “VERY” angle and solved yellow.
That left blue and purple, and here I was stuck. Maybe I would have had a better chance with PBS SHOWS if I had watched American TV, but I live in the UK and don’t really know shows like MASTERPIECE and FRONTLINE. My attention was instead focused on ANGERS – a strange word for Connections, and one that didn’t seem to fit anywhere else. But the word NICE kept nagging at me, and I knew that CHAMPAGNE is also a French place, so I merged them with REUNION and ANGERS and dissolved purple.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games from the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a bit harder, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don’t technically have to solve the last question, because you can answer it by elimination. Plus, you can make a maximum of four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It is a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can obscure the answers.
It is free to play via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
