NYT Connections Today (Contest #473) – The Answers
The answers to today’s Connections game, #473, are…
- YELLOW: DECORATIVE BORDER EDGE, EDGE, FRINGE, COVERING
- GREEN: INCREASE, IN A WAY GROW, BUILD, Swell, WASH
- BLUE: SPECIFICATIONS FOR A BARTENDER DRY, NEAT, STRAIGHT, VIRGIN
- PURPLE: CORD ___ BEAN, BIKINI, CHEESE, THEORY
- My rating: Moderate
- My score: Perfect
Give me a group with CHEESE and I guarantee I’ll solve it. It doesn’t matter what the connection is – if it involves cheese, I’m up for the challenge. And so it went today with STRING ___, the hardest purple group, which I got on my very first guess, when I saw that CHEESE, THEORY, BEAN, and BIKINI could all go after STRING.
I marked this Connections puzzle as moderate instead of easy because even though I didn’t make any mistakes, the other three groups still required quite a bit of thinking. Perhaps I played a little more conservatively than I sometimes am, but I stared and stared and stared at the board for what seemed like an hour (but was probably about five minutes) before I spotted the yellow DECORATIVE EDGE group, and then a bit longer before I got to SPECIFICATIONS FOR A BARTENDER.
How was your day? Send me an email and let me know.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games from the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a bit harder, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don’t technically have to solve the last question, because you can answer it by elimination. Plus, you can make a maximum of four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It is a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can obscure the answers.
It is free to play via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
