NYT Connections Today (Game #527) – The Answers
The answers to today’s Connections game, game #527, are…
- YELLOW: AREA OF EXPERTISE CONCENTRATION, FIELD, FOCUS, SPECIALTY
- GREEN: WAYS TO UNLOCK A DEVICE FACE, FINGERPRINT, PASSWORD, PIN
- BLUE: PASTA MOLDS EAR, ELBOW, RIBBON, WHEEL
- PURPLE: DOUBLE ___ AGENT, DRIBBLE, DANGER, STANDARD
- My rating: Moderate
- My score: Perfect
I got a perfect score today, but that was largely due to luck. Not with the first two groups, green and yellow in that order, both of which were quite easy. Green – WAYS TO UNLOCK A DEVICE – was particularly easy as I’m a technology journalist when I’m not writing this column, with FACE, FINGERPRINT, PASSWORD and PIN all being rather obvious.
As so often, I had trouble with blue and purple. I had a hunch that WIEL and OOR might go together with a vague food theme: AAR of corn and WIEL of cheese perhaps? RIBBON felt like it might work for PASTA, while ELBOW… well, I wasn’t sure, but you’re getting a steak, so maybe there was an elbow somewhere. I guessed it without expecting it to be right, but to my surprise it was – and for almost the right reason. I had been on the right track with pasta because these were all PASTA SHAPES, which was obvious in retrospect. Purple was a difficult ‘blank’ variety that I wouldn’t have gotten because I didn’t know what DOUBLE DRIBBLE means.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the New York Times’ increasingly popular word games. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is often quite tough, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you technically don’t have to solve the last question because you can answer it by a process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It’s a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, beware of homophones and other word games that can obscure the answers.
It is playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
