NYT Connections Today (Game #513) – The Answers
The answers to today’s Connections game, game #513, are…
- YELLOW: THINGS THAT ARE UNWORTHY CATERPILLAR, FLEECE, PEACH, PIPE CLEANER
- GREEN: THINGS WITH SHELLS GLASS, EGG, NUTS, TURTLE
- BLUE: NUMBERS IN “SHREK” DONKEY, DRAGON, OGRE, PRINCESS
- PURPLE: MAGIC ___ CARPET, KINGDOM, MARKER, MUSHROOM
- My rating: Moderate
- My score: Failure
I’m so angry with myself today. I failed in today’s match – my first defeat in several weeks – but I really shouldn’t have. My mistake was that I misidentified the purple MAGIC___ group. Or rather, I correctly identified the connection – but not the words it contained.
Early on I saw MARKER, MUSHROOM, CARPET and KINGDOM, the four solutions, but for some reason also FLEECE. I thought about the Golden Fleece, from Greek myth, but wrongly concluded that it was called magic and not gold. That led to three times when I got guess groups that included FLEECE, but not any of the other four, and I lost most of my guesses. I then looked elsewhere and lost my last attempt in the group THINGS THAT ARE FUZZY.
The frustrating thing was that I solved green (THINGS WITH SHELLS) and blue (NUMBERS IN “SHREK”) without too much trouble. If only I had checked that purple group more carefully, I’m sure I would have completed this. Oh!
How did you do today? Send me an email and let me know.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the New York Times’ increasingly popular word games. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is often quite tough, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you technically don’t have to solve the last question because you can answer it by a process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It’s a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, beware of homophones and other word games that can obscure the answers.
It is playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
