NYT Connections Today (Contest #464) – The Answers
The answers to today’s Connections game, #464, are…
- YELLOW: GET EXCITED, WITH “UP” AMP, FIRE, HYPE, PSYCH
- GREEN: TYPES OF SHOES FLAT, MULE, PUMP, SLIDE
- BLUE: LEGISLATIVE ROLES CHAIRMAN, LEADER, SPEAKER, WHIP
- PURPLE: NAME HOMOPHONES DUGGED, MAT, MIC, TEF
- My rating: Simple
- My score: 1 error
Only one mistake for me today, and that was right at the start of what turned out to be (allegedly) the easiest of the four groups. Luckily, both blue and purple were a lot easier than they sometimes are, so I was never close to failing.
Purple was one of my favorites; I love homophone puzzles and always look for them in Connections. While they are usually the hardest group, they are only hard because they are “hidden” compared to easy synonym groups; if you see one, the other three are usually easy to find, so I always pronounce each word just in case. That happened today with PEAT, where I looked at it and thought… PETE? Then I looked at the rest of the board and found MATTE (MATT), DUG (DOUG), and MIC (MIKE). Nice.
How was your day? Send me an email and let me know.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games from the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a bit harder, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don’t technically have to solve the last question, because you can answer it by elimination. Plus, you can make a maximum of four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It is a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can obscure the answers.
It is free to play via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
