NYT Connections Today (Game #743) – The answers
The answers to today’s connections, Game #743, are …
- Yellow: Types of jeans Boyfriend, flare, mom, lean
- Green: Fiction categories Historical, literary, speculative, young adult
- Blue: words in hemingway titles Bell, Farewell, Old Man, Sun
- Purple: ___ glass glass work Cocktail, collins, old -fashioned, shot
- My review: Difficult
- My score: Failure
The first thing I thought when I saw today’s connections were ‘alcoholic beverages’ – not because I am obsessed (I am not a big drinker), but because old -fashioned and collins can be both types of cocktail. But the presence of cocktail itself suggested that this was a deception, so I looked elsewhere.
Historical, literary, speculative and young adults all seemed examples of fiction categories and indeed my feeling was correct, which gave me green.
Then I thought that Flare, Skinny and Bell might be all related to jeans, or types of Broekstijl – but did not know what the fourth would be, so it kept looking.
And I kept looking. And look.
Because nothing else suggested itself, I returned to that potential group and tried a succession of words – mom, old -fashioned and old man – but was wrong every time. It turns out that Bell was wrong, and what I should have had was boyfriend, flare, mum and skinny – but I have never heard the term boyfriend jeans and have lost my young line.
In retrospect, I would probably have given up that perspective earlier, but neither of them in Hemingway titles or ___ Glass Glass Tware were groups that I would ever have received, so it would have made no difference.
How did you do it today? Let me know in the comments below.

What are NYT connections?
NYT Connections is one of the many increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.
On the positive side, you do not have to solve the last technically because you can answer it through an elimination process. What is more, you can make a maximum of four mistakes, which gives you a little breathing space.
However, it is slightly more involved than something like Wordel, and there are many possibilities for the game to stumble with tricks. For example, watch out for gay and other word games that can hide the answers.
