NYT Strands Today (Contest #146) – The Answers
The answers to today’s Strands question, game #146, are…
- CLOCKS
- NO ONE
- SOCKS
- MITTENS
- MUSHROOM
- KITTENS
- SPANGRAM: GOODNIGHT MOON
- My score: Astonished
- My score: 2 tips
I had exactly 0% idea what was going on here until I finished the game, when I googled GOODNIGHTMOON, the spangram, and discovered it was a children’s book from 1947. True. Now, I’d never heard of it before, and it seems like a completely bizarre choice to build a Strands puzzle around, unless it’s far better known in the US, where the NYT is based, than it is in the UK. Or maybe it’s just me? But I have kids, I’ve read them hundreds of books when they were young, and I’ve never come across this one.
Anyway, all of that made it a bit of a struggle to solve. I got through most of it just by guessing random words, but couldn’t figure out the spangram. I saw that GOODNIGHT fit, and given the theme clue I thought maybe that was part of it, but nothing I tried worked. Eventually I had to use hints to get the last two words (MUSH and KITTENS), at which point I considered the spangram standard.
