Luckily, we have Mad Men. I devoured the brilliant AMC show during lockdown, having somehow missed it when it originally aired, about ten years ago. Without it, I would probably have found today’s Strands much, much tougher. Now I remembered lead character Don Draper’s favourite drink and thus the spangram OLDFASHIONED.
Not that I knew the ingredients as such – but I remembered enough that finding BITTERS, WATER, CHERRY and SUGAR wasn’t an impossible task. It may have been without WHISKEY, but thankfully the theme clue ‘On the rocks’ had set me on the path to finding it, making the whole thing more manageable than it otherwise would have been.

Strands is the new word game from the NYT, after Wordle and Connections. It is now out of beta and is therefore a full member of the NYT stable of games and can be played on the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
