To safeguard the lives of the gharials’ young during the monsoon, twelve babies were rescued from the gorge and housed in Gharial Research and Conservation Unit at Tikarpara.
It is estimated that a total of 35 cubs were born in the gorge, of which 12 were rescued.
He said there were fears during the monsoon that they would be swept downstream.
Panda said that since deaths were reported last year, special attention was paid this year to prevent such deaths.
They were housed in a special swimming pool created in the unit.
“We could prevent the mortality of the gharials’ young. They are all in good health after their release,” he added.
