A star political reporter for New York magazine is on leave over an affair with RFK Jr.

Washington correspondent Olivia Nuzzi told the editorial board she had “a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign,” the newspaper confirmed.

Nuzzi, 31, has been engaged to Ryan Lizza, 50, Politico’s chief Washington correspondent, since 2022.

RFK Jr., 70, is said to have met the political journalist when she profiled him last year.

“Recently, our Washington correspondent Olivia Nuzzi acknowledged to the magazine’s editors that she had a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign while covering the campaign. This violates the magazine’s standards regarding conflicts of interest and disclosure,” New York magazine said in a statement.

“If the magazine had known about this relationship, she wouldn’t have covered the presidential campaign.

‘An internal review of her published work found no inaccuracies or evidence of bias.

“She is currently on leave from the magazine and the magazine is conducting a more thorough third-party investigation. We regret this breach of our readers’ trust.”

The two met when Nuzzi walked RFK, a father of six, for a portrait in New York magazine last year.

A spokesman for RFK Jr. said CNN: ‘Mr. Kennedy met Olivia Nuzzi only once in his life, for an interview she requested, which resulted in a damning article.’

An insider told the newspaper that the relationship was “emotional and digital in nature, not physical.”

A source close to Nuzzi told Status that the relationship only began after the profile was published in November 2023. The alleged couple are said to have started dating around New Year’s Eve.

According to people familiar with the matter, she did not proactively disclose the affair and New York Magazine only recently learned about it.

The reporter acknowledged that there was an inappropriate relationship with CNN, but did not name the person involved.

“Earlier this year, the nature of the communications between me and a former reporter became personal,” she said.

“I did not report directly on the subject at the time, nor did I use the sources as sources,” she said.

“The relationship was never physical, but should have been made public to avoid the appearance of conflict. I regret not doing so immediately and apologize to those I disappointed, especially my colleagues in New York.”

In her profile, Nuzzi describes meeting the former presidential candidate at the $7 million California home he shares with his wife.

She paints a picture of RFK Jr. as an anti-establishment candidate who will “turn the presidential election upside down.”

“Fear and denial seem to be the feelings Kennedy arouses among the staunch Washington elite who support the sitting president and among the anti-establishment mob who support the former president,” she wrote.

She discusses the root causes of the conflict in RFK Jr.’s marriage, including a disagreement between him and his wife over his appearances on Steve Bannon’s show and those of other right-wing personalities.

“Bannon was just the beginning. Poor Cheryl,” Nuzzi wrote.

At the time the piece was published, RFK Jr. was running as an independent candidate. He has since withdrawn and endorsed Trump.

Nuzzi’s latest article, in which she described how she examined Trump’s ear after the attempted assassination of Butler, was published in New York magazine on September 9.

This comes amid news that RFK Jr. is under federal investigation for allegedly cutting off the head of a dead whale and taking it home with him twenty years ago.

RFK Jr. has been married to Hines since 2014. In addition to their six children and two grandchildren, he is also stepfather to her daughter from a previous relationship.
