The wife of Olympian Ryan Lochte applies for a divorce after seven years of marriage.
Swimming icon Lochte has been married to Kayla Rae Reid since 2018 after they started dating in 2016.
Reid, however, revealed that she had made the decision to end their marriage.
In an emotional Instagram statement, the 33-year-old said: “Earlier this year I made the difficult decision to end my marriage after deep prayer and reflection.
“I have the wedding in the highest way, so this is one of the most painful, revealing and challenging seasons of my life.
“I hesitate to share until I could do this from a place of healing – not of fresh, open wounds.
“Sometimes we are confronted with tests that we have not chosen or see coming.
“And at those moments we are forced to make the most difficult decisions to protect our peace, our children and our future.
“I started to understand that staying is not always the most loving decision that someone can make. For me it was leaving love – for the people around me and myself.”
According to the court reports reported by PeopleKayla submitted a divorce on 26 March.
The couple welcomed three children during their marriage; Caiden, Zeven, Liv, Five and Georgia, 23 months.
Lochte has won 12 medals at the Olympic Games, including six gold, three silver and three bronze.
His exploits made him the second most decorated male swimmer in the Olympic history, behind teammate Michael Phelps.
The 40-year-old has released his own statement about the divorce.
He said: “I just want to take the time to acknowledge what Kayla has shared.
“In the past year, both have made major changes for both of us, because we have come to the difficult decision to end our marriage.
“I am deeply grateful for the life we have built together and especially for the love we share for our three children.
“Although this decision has not been easy, I believe that this is the right step in the direction of peace and well -being for both of us.
“I continue to use healing, growth and co-parenting with care and respect while we are progressing separately.
“Thanks to our family and friends for your continuous support – it really means a lot when we start this new chapter.”
Neither of them has revealed the reason behind the divorce.
