One death and four seriously injured after a horror crash between a car and a group of cyclists in the NSW Northern Tablelands

A cyclist has been killed and four others are fighting for their lives after a car allegedly plowed into a group of cyclists during a race in the NSW Northern Tablelands.
Dozens of emergency services, including paramedics, police, fire brigades and two rescue helicopters, responded to the horror crash on Long Swamp Road, about 9 miles south-west of Armidale, at 3.30pm on Saturday.
One cyclist was pronounced dead, while three others were rushed to hospital.
The driver of the car, a woman in her 40s, had to be cut free after it crashed into a tree. She is being treated at the scene and remains in critical condition.
“There are still several paramedics on scene,” a NSW Ambulance spokesperson said.
‘Two cyclists were transported by road to Armidale Hospital, while a third cyclist was taken to Armidale Airport to be met by a Westpac rescue helicopter.’
“The driver, a woman in her 40s, is in a critical condition.”
A NSW Police spokesperson said they have responded to reports of this ‘a car and several cyclists collided before the car continued driving and crashed into a tree’.

There are still several emergency services on site
‘One of the cyclists died on the spot. He has yet to be formally identified,” the spokesperson added.
‘Three other cyclists were injured and are being treated at the scene.
‘The driver of the vehicle was trapped and was released shortly after the emergency services arrived. She is also being treated on site.’
“The condition of all the injured is unknown.”
Long Swamp Road, near the intersection with Edwards Road, remains closed and is not expected to reopen until tomorrow (Sunday, December 15, 2024).
