OnePlus promises free screen upgrade for select models in India: report

OnePlus last year announced a lifetime screen warranty for users who were affected by the green line issue on its smartphone displays. Now, the Chinese tech brand is apparently offering a free screen upgrade program for select handset models in India to address the green line screen defect that has plagued AMOLED panels in the past few years. The initiative is part of OnePlus’ Red Cable Club loyalty program and it aims to cover some old OnePlus phones such as the OnePlus 8 Pro, OnePlus 8T, OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9R.

An astute X-user Starcommander (@Starcommander10) spotted a new benefit in OnePlus’ Red Cable Club loyalty program. The screenshot shared by the user shows that OnePlus is offering a Lifetime Free Screen Upgrade offer as part of this membership program. According to this offer, OnePlus 8 Pro, OnePlus 8T, OnePlus 9, and OnePlus 9R users are eligible for a “free screen upgrade” and free phone cleaning and maintenance service at OnePlus service centers in India.

The screenshot shows that OnePlus devices that are free of external damage are eligible for this free service. They should not have been ‘privately disassembled’.

OnePlus Free Screen Diagnosis and Service Initiative

In addition, a report Insights shared by Android Authority on OnePlus’ free display upgrade. The brand is reportedly rolling out a free Screen Diagnostics and Service Initiative that includes three levels of services. The first, Comprehensive Diagnostics, includes an inspection of the display’s performance and reliability. The second, Screen Upgrades and Replacements service, will provide eligible users with a “new, advanced display panel” that improves the display’s performance, and finally, the Deep Cleaning Service to ensure it’s working optimally.

OnePlus has reportedly confirmed that this initiative will primarily focus on the OnePlus 8 Pro. It will extend the initiative to some older models, depending on the availability of the display. “Devices with human-caused damage, such as drops or liquid ingress, are not eligible for this free upgrade and will need to be repaired through our standard after-sales service,” the report quotes OnePlus as saying.

This exclusive free screen upgrade from OnePlus is reportedly limited to Indian users for now. OnePlus is reportedly considering extending similar benefits to other regions like the US.

As a reminder, OnePlus officially acknowledged the infamous green line issue last year and announced a lifetime warranty for affected smartphones. Under this program, the company will replace the displays on affected phones for free. On select OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 9 series devices, the brand gave a voucher to upgrade to a new OnePlus device.
