NEW DELHI: As fresh violence broke out in Manipur, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday accused the ruling party of deliberately setting the state on fire, alleging that it serves their divisive political agenda. He also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failing to address the ongoing unrest in the state, further claiming that “he is only concerned about saving his seat.”
In a post on Highlighting the suffering of the people, he said the state has endured “unimaginable pain, division and simmering violence” since May 2023, which he said has destroyed the future of his people.

“We say with utmost responsibility that it appears that the BJP deliberately wants Manipur to be burnt as it serves its hateful, divisive politics,” he said.
The Congress president further said, “The people of the state will never forgive or forget that Prime Minister Modi left them to fend for themselves and never set foot in their state to cure their woes.” He added that at least 17 people have been killed since November 7, and violence is spreading to neighboring northeastern states.
Kharge condemned the Prime Minister’s global travels when there was no control violence in Manipur, in contrast to Rahul Gandhi’s visit during the Bharat Jodo Yatra.
“Rahul Gandhi went to Manipur and did Bharat Jodo Yatra… but Prime Minister Modi is traveling around the world. He is not worried about the nation, he is only worried about the election campaigns and saving his seat. In Maharashtra, Prime Minister Modi is abusing Congress,” Kharge said.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi also expressed concern over the ongoing violence in Manipur. He called the clashes “very disturbing” and urged Prime Minister Modi to visit the state and work towards restoring peace.
“After more than a year of division and suffering, it was the hope of every Indian that the central and state governments would make every effort to achieve reconciliation,” Gandhi said in a post on to visit Manipur and help bring healing to the region.

Violence has escalated in Manipur and protests have intensified after the bodies of three of the six missing persons were recovered from a river. Protesters on Saturday attacked the residences of three state ministers and six MLAs, prompting the government to impose indefinite prohibitory orders in five districts and suspend internet services in parts of the state.
In Imphal, protesters looted the houses of several lawmakers, including that of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s son-in-law, and set fire to their properties. Security forces responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd.
