OpenAI could develop an AI web browser for Google Chrome
OpenAI is reportedly planning to build a native web browser powered by artificial intelligence (AI). According to a report, the AI company plans to use Google Chrome with its browser platform and has started discussing its plans with several website and app developers. Additionally, the AI company is also reportedly in talks with Samsung to integrate its AI feature into the latter’s devices. These developments, in addition to the recently released SearchGPT feature, could see OpenAI compete with Google on several fronts.
OpenAI is reportedly planning to develop a web browser
A report in The Information, citing people familiar with the matter, shed some light on OpenAI’s plans. OpenAI plans to develop a native web browser that integrates with ChatGPT to provide users with an AI-powered experience, the publication said.
OpenAI has reportedly spoken to several website and app developers such as Condé Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite and Priceline to build the web browser. The discussions also reportedly include deals to boost search functions for travel, food, real estate and retail websites. It is believed that the latter is intended to extend the functionality of SearchGPT.
Why OpenAI might consider developing its own web browser
The report also highlighted two more reasons why the AI company is considering building its browser. First, OpenAI is said to want to control the primary gateway through which people use the Internet to increase the user base for ChatGPT. Secondly, there are rumors that the company will soon release a feature called ‘Operator’ – AI agents that can perform complex tasks on the web. The company doesn’t want to rely on third-party browsers to grant permission to the AI agent.
Separately, the publication claimed that OpenAI has also discussed the possibility of powering AI features on Samsung-made devices. The partnership offered would be similar to the partnership with Apple. If this deal goes through, the AI company will power AI features on both of Google’s major Pixel smartphone competitors.
In addition, the ChatGPT maker also competes with Google in the search engine field with SearchGPT. The feature is available within ChatGPT and is highlighted by the globe-shaped web icon. When activated, the chatbot generates responses by pulling them directly from websites on the web instead of using the internal knowledge base.
