- OpenAI has upgraded the project function of Chatgpt to remember chats, tone preferences and files from the past
- Projects now offer deep research, speech mode, mobile file uploads and more
- OpenAI wants projects to function more as smart workplaces than one -off chats
Chatgpt’s project function has been a useful way to organize conversations with the AI chatbot Since it debuted, but it has had its limitations. A large set of upgrades released by Openi This week, projects from a simple file map transformed into a very targeted version of Chatgpt as a whole.
The projects -function debuted as a way to organize related chats and files in one digital shoe box. But now that organization means that chatgpt will remember that those chats and files are related. So if you start a chat within a project, the AI will remember things from other chats in that project, referring to your previous messages within the same workspace.
If you start a new project, you can upload your notes, chat on the subject with chatgpt, to ask online comparisons and then come back three days later to continue the conversation without re -doing or having the AI to quote non -related discussions. Chatgpt does not only remember the subjects. It will remember your formatting preferences, as well as your tone.
And that can now be much more complex conversations now that projects include Deep Research Tool, with which you can perform multi-step tasks in Chatgpt, combine your files and instructions with live information from the internet.
You can now also use Chatgpt’s speech mode in projects. Tap the microphone in every project and start talking about the files inside or something else, and you see it appear. And if you use the mobile app, you can now upload and switch files between GPT-4O or other models.
Other upgrades are less small but still important. For example, if you have a project that you do not want to share in its entirety, but it contains a certain chatgpt conversation that you want to send to someone, you can do that now. And if a discussion with chatgpt suddenly inspires you to start a project, you can now drag it directly to a project folder or convert it directly from the sidebar.
Not everyone can use the upgraded projects -functions. You have to be a chatgpt plus or pro subscriber for the time being. On the basis of many other chatgpt functions that were once exclusive to subscribers, it would not surprise me if they were accessible to free users at a certain moment in the future.
AI Project Power
As impressive as Chatgpt projects could now be, I would not expect that I would see offices that would quickly throw away their notion or Trello programs. They still miss some of the common elements of those tools, such as calendars. But for personal or simply smaller efforts, it is a nice improvement of the AI assistant, one that can at least help to open with the AI infusions that Google has added to its ecosystem.
OpenAi has been clear that they don’t just want to become a chatbot provider. They want to be your go-to for life and work. These upgrades feel like the early sketches of something more ambitious. OpenAi could someday pitch chatgpt as an alternative to switching between ten apps. Instead, one day you can just open chatgpt and say, “Let’s continue where we left the next work presentation.”
A bit of experiments from my side discovered that the improved projects seemed almost immediately more efficient, but not without any hiccups. A large collection of conversations that I organized for testing other functions was a bit too enthusiastic to dreden the first interactions instead of drawing from more recent discussions about Chatgpt’s possibilities. And although projects now refer to chats from the past, the actual search and navigation between those chats is still not perfect. There is no Boolean logic to insulate certain sentences yet, so you might have to do some scrolling to find what you are looking for.
Yet even with the inevitable friction I can see the value of making projects more a self-organizing AI data source, instead of just a file folder for documents, as it has been. Whether it is about research, analyzing data or plotting the perfect party, it can make the use of chatgpt much less chaotic.
