OpenAI is considering showing ads on ChatGPT
OpenAI is reportedly looking at advertising as a way to create a new revenue stream. According to a report, the AI company is considering running ads on ChatGPT, the company’s AI-powered chatbot platform. However, it is said that there is no decision on when and how these ads can appear. One speculation is that the ads could be shown to ChatGPT’s free users, but the company could also go a route similar to Perplexity, which is testing showing ads to all users.
Advertisements on ChatGPT
According to a Financial Times reportthe AI company sees ads on ChatGPT as a viable option to boost its revenue. Sarah Friar, OpenAI’s chief financial officer, told the publication in an interview that the company was considering creating an ad-based revenue model, but added that the intention was to be “thoughtful about when and where we implement it. ”
The report added that Friar also issued a statement after the interview in which the CFO emphasized that OpenAI’s existing business models were witnessing accelerated growth and the focus was on tapping into the opportunities therein. “While we are open to exploring other revenue streams in the future, we have no active plans to advertise,” Friar told the Financial Times.
Despite conflicting comments on the subject, the CFO did not completely rule out the decision to show ads on ChatGPT in the future. The report also claimed, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter, that OpenAI has hired people who specialize in advertising from rivals such as Meta and Google.
Ad-based revenue models are also easy to implement and monetize. Recently, Perplexity also tested showing ads on its platform as sponsored content. Although the project is in its pilot phase and will only be shown in the US, it will likely be expanded to other regions. Google has also started showing ads on AI Overviews, the AI-generated summaries shown on its search platform.
However, OpenAI has also explored other ways to generate revenue. Earlier this year, it partnered with Apple to integrate ChatGPT with the tech giant’s operating systems. The AI company also recently launched its AI-powered search engine and is reportedly planning to release AI agents and the Sora video model.
