OpenAi is in conversation to acquire Windsurf, an AI-driven computer programming tool for around $ 3 billion, according to two people who are familiar with the discussions.
The acquisition can open thousands of new customers in the technical industry, which quickly embraces tools, such as windsurf, which can generate a direct computer code.
The potential deal, which would be the largest acquisition of OpenAi, is part of the company’s efforts to expand what it can offer than his popular chatbot, chatgpt. Last year, OpenAi Rockset took over, a start-up that helped companies build the notes and bolts from large computer networks.
Windsurf, previously known as Codeium, was appreciated last year at $ 1.25 billion, after a financing round of $ 150 million under the leadership of the Risk Capital Company General Catalyst.
The deal is not yet final, said the two people who spoke on condition of anonymity. The conversations were previously reported by Bloomberg.
OpenAI already open offers technology that can generate its own code. Windsurf even relies on OpenAI technology – or similar systems of companies such as Google or Anthropic – to generate code.
About four years ago, researchers from companies such as OpenAI and Google started designing systems that analyzed huge amounts of text that were tuned from the internet, including digital books, Wikipedia articles and chat logs. By locating patterns in all that text, these systems can generate text themselves, including poetry and news articles.
To the surprise of the researchers who built these systems, they could even write their own computer code. Now programmers use these systems to generate code and fold them in larger software development projects through different products, including windsurf and Microsoft’s Copilot.
(The Times has sued OpenAi and his partner, Microsoft, accuse them of infringing copyright with regard to news content with regard to AI systems. OpenAi and Microsoft have denied those claims.)
Building up the technology that feeds these coding tools in electricity is extremely expensive for companies such as OpenAI, and the start-up is under pressure to increase income.
OpenAi expects around $ 3.7 billion in sales this year, According to financial documents assessed by the New York Times. OpenAi estimated that the turnover would reach $ 11.6 billion next year.
In March, OpenAI completed a fundraising deal of $ 40 billion that the company appreciated at $ 300 billion, making it one of the most valuable private companies in the world, together with the Rocket Company SpaceX and Bytedance, the Maker of Tiktok. The round was led by the Japanese conglomerate Softbank.
But the deal has a warning: OpenAi tries to change its complicated business structure, and if it does not do at the end of the year, Softbank has the option to reduce its total contribution to $ 20 billion, a person who is familiar with the deal.
