OpenAI may develop its own AI chipsets
OpenAI is reportedly developing its own artificial intelligence (AI) chipset, which will be manufactured by chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC). According to a report, the AI firm wants to build a custom chipset based on the A16 Angstrom process, which is not yet in mass production. Interestingly, Apple has also reportedly placed orders for the same chipsets, which will likely be used in future iPhone models. This synergy is said to be more than a coincidence, and it is believed that both companies are collaborating on future AI features, including Sora.
OpenAI In-House AI Chipsets
According to a Money.udn reportOpenAI has tapped TSMC to produce A16 Angstrom chipsets. The publication, citing sources familiar with the matter, claims that the AI company is looking to develop its own AI chipsets. While the manufacturing process will be handled by the Taiwan-based chipmaker, OpenAI will customize it to suit its AI systems.
The report also claimed that the ChatGPT maker is looking at developing its own chipsets to power resource-intensive AI systems like Sora, its generative video model. Notably, Sora is still in development and the company has not yet revealed when it might be available to the public.
However, Apple has also reportedly asked TSMC to produce the A16 Angstrom chipset for its future iPhone models. While the move is not new for the Cupertino-based tech giant, the reason OpenAI has also reportedly opted for the same chipset manufacturing process is because the two companies plan to collaborate on future AI projects.
A Wccftech report claims that OpenAI plans to eventually integrate Sora’s features into the iPhone. As such, using the same chipset would allow for better optimization of the feature and easier implementation. Apple is reportedly interested in this partnership because the AI features could help boost iPhone sales.
Separately, another report claims that Apple and Nvidia are interested in investing in OpenAI as part of a new fundraising. The rumored funding round would take the AI company’s market value above $100 billion (approximately Rs 7,870 crore).
