OpenAI ‘Strawberry’ AI model may launch before end of September

OpenAI Strawberry, a rumored new artificial intelligence (AI) model with enhanced reasoning and mathematical problem-solving capabilities, is reportedly set to launch in late September. According to a report, the new AI model will launch within ChatGPT and also be included in a separate offering. Earlier this year, the AI company was rumored to be working on this new generative AI technology that can imagine and solve complex tasks that require multi-step problem-solving. Notably, Strawberry is not said to be the next generation of GPT, but a separate model with added features.

OpenAI nears release of Strawberry AI

The information reports that the alleged AI model is currently in the final stages of internal testing, which usually suggests a beta or public release is on the way. The publication, citing anonymous people who have tested the model, claims that the Strawberry model could arrive within two weeks.

However, it also added that plans could change, as release timelines are typically subject to change. Notably, Strawberry is the internal codename of the AI model, and it could be introduced with different branding at launch.

Additionally, Strawberry AI is said to have “the ability to think.” The AI model reportedly doesn’t start generating a response immediately after the prompt is added, and takes between 10 and 20 seconds to deliver the output.

The AI model would be available within the company’s native chatbot ChatGPT. However, it will reportedly be available as a separate offering, likely for those customers using the application programming interface (API) version of the tool. Details on how these two iterations will be integrated, and whether they will have any differences, are not known.

According to the report, the AI model will be text-based only at launch and will not support images or videos.

Last month, a report revealed that OpenAI’s Strawberry AI could be released in the fall, but no specific timeline was given. The report also highlighted that the AI model will not be released as GPT-5, as the next iteration of the large language model is in development.
