The research center is expected to be built in January next year.

In a newsroom afterOppo highlighted that the representatives of Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Oppo held a signing ceremony to officially commemorate the occasion. Notably, this is an extension of a previous three-year partnership that launched in 2022. As part of the new deal, the smartphone maker will increase funding and technology investments for the university and help establish a research center dedicated to AI imaging technology.
The new agreement was signed by Prof. Christopher Chao, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU and Mr. Zheng Qin, Head of Industry-Academia Affairs of Oppo. The Chinese brand will provide funding of CNY 30 million (approximately Rs. 35.5 crores) over the next five years.
The cash fund will be used to establish a Joint Innovation Research Center and expand the scope of jointly trained PhD and postdoctoral researchers. The entire effort will be aimed at achieving breakthroughs in AI imaging technology.
Professor Jin-Guang Teng of PolyU and a witness at the ceremony emphasized that the university will officially establish the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences in January 2025, which will house the Joint Innovation Research Center. The department will be established to “address the opportunities and challenges of the AI era,” to meet growing technology needs and support talent development.
While the company hasn’t revealed any details about the AI imaging technology it plans to develop, it’s likely referring to computer vision AI models that can view and process images, videos, device screens, and even the real world. Oppo could develop this technology to increase its AI offering to users.
