The opposition's demand for a JPC will make the winter session of Parliament stormy
NEW DELHI: The upcoming winter session of Parliament on November 25, days after the high-stakes elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, is set to be stormy with opposition likely to bring charges against Gautam Adani by US agencies.
An indication of likely turbulence came on Thursday when opposition leader Rahul Gandhi demanded the formation of a JPC to investigate the allegations. The demand is unlikely to be accepted.
“The Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha will now create a drama when the winter session of Parliament begins and try to disrupt the proceedings and focus on the economy,” said BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra in what was seen as a reference to the government’s position.
Some opposition parties may not join the agitation, but this is unlikely to be a deterrent for the Congress and others.
The winter session is already expected to be contentious, with the opposition opposing key items on the government’s legislative agenda – a bill to amend the constitution to implement the ‘one nation, one election’ plan and the Waqf (Amendment) Act to strive for.
The addition of the new Adani controversy will only impact the political atmosphere, making the session a focal point for both policy and political drama.
Earlier, allegations by US short seller Hindenburg Research of stock manipulation and accounting fraud had caused a week of chaos in parliament, with the opposition demanding a debate and investigation.
The BJP, for its part, had previously managed to weather these storms by either downplaying the opposition’s demands or by mustering enough support to ensure ‘business as usual’. The indictment against Adani in the US marks a new challenge, especially when the political environment is already charged due to the heated election battles in Maharashtra and Jharkhand.
