OTTAWA: Canada has denied that it ever banned Australia Today, the grassroots media outlet aimed at the Indian diaspora. Global Affairs Canada said in a statement that the news site and video of media comments from both Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and his Australian counterpart Penny Wong can be easily and freely viewed in Canada.
The Indian government had previously accused Canada of “hypocrisy” on freedom of expression by banning Australia Today. “In Canada, Meta, owner and operator of Facebook and Instagram, blocked the sharing of news content on their sites regardless of the point of sale,” the Canadian statement said.
“This follows a decision by Meta to block news on its social media platforms in Canada since 2023. This is in line with Meta’s broader business strategy to de-emphasize news on its platforms globally,” it added.
