Owen breaks silence about ‘well done he is 13’ gag 26 years after the humiliating teenager

It is probably the cringest moment of the long list of Michael Owen.

But now he has broken his silence on the infamous “well done, he is 13” gag from Neville Southall.

Owen Explained in a video by Michael Owen Soccer Skills in 1999, where he was confronted with a young keeper in an empty Stoke City stage.

The former striker of England did his best for the 13-year-old Jamie Hutchinson, who received goalkeeper tips from Southhall.

To his honor, Hutchinson has made some rescues.

But the video is reminded that Owen Chipping completes and shoots past the helpless child between the sticks – before he is shamelessly celebrating every finish.

The smiling ex-liverpool-man clamped his fists on top of each other, ran away with his arms up, mocked the keeper for waving him and pointed to his name on the back of his shirt.

But it was his embarrassing scream of “Get in there – game, set and match, Owen” who activated Southall’s brilliant quip.

Southall said: “Well done, he is 13”, a comment that remains a viral sensation and etched in British football heritage.

But now, 26 years later, Owen opened the clip – and revealed that not everything was completely as it seemed because he was told to play in front of the cameras.

He told Talking: “I was only a few years older than he himself!. It is probably funny now.

“I came back from the World Cup in 98 and there were many commercial opportunities, things like that.

“I was asked to make a video of football skills and a book skills book. So I had to explain, go through, volley, headlines, whatever the skill was. Inevitably you need a keeper there.

“I never picked them up and so I show up to do the show and talk about how I see a goal scoring and what I think in certain scenarios and whatever.

“There was a child in goal that I had to score past and when I scored, they are:” Come on, no, you have to show a little more animation. Like celebrating when you score, this is on a video. “

And Owen continued: “People just laugh at you, whatever happens. Then they take a small extract of something.

‘Not exactly ideal’

Hutchinson spoke about the viral video in 2016 and admitted that he knew it would not be too good for him.

He said: “The goalkeeper is on a program led by a striker was not exactly ideal for me.

And even Southhall himself defended Owen’s actions earlier this year.
