NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday shared a video of his interaction with India’s Paralympic contingent, including coaches and players. “India’s Paralympic champions have set a new benchmark with the highest ever medal count“It was a pleasure interacting with them,” Prime Minister Modi said while sharing the video on X.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met and congratulated the Indian Paralympic team at his residence 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, for their remarkable performance during the Paris Olympics.
The Indian contingent concluded its Paralympic campaign in Paris on Sunday, September 8, setting a new record by bagging 29 medals, including seven gold, nine silver and 13 bronze. This is the highest medal tally for India in the history of the Paralympic Games, surpassing the previous record of 19 medals secured at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. India finished the event at 18th position overall.
Several records were broken and new milestones achieved by Indian athletes at the Paralympic GamesAvani Lekhara, a para-archer, became the first Indian woman to win two gold medals at the Paralympic Games. She successfully defended her SH1 women’s title in the 10m standing air rifle event, achieving a world record score of 249.7 points.
In a historic moment, India achieved its first one-two finish in a para-athletics event, with Dharambir and Parnav Soorma winning gold and silver respectively in the men’s club throw F51 event. These were among India’s first-ever medals in the sport, and Dharambir also set an Asian record of 34.92 metres.
Harvinder Singh became the first Indian archery champion at both the Olympics and Paralympics, winning the gold medal in the individual recurve para-archery event against Poland’s Lukasz Ciszek.
India’s javelin ace Sumit Antil became the first Indian man to defend his Paralympic title by winning back-to-back gold medals in the F64 event with a stunning Paralympic record-breaking throw of 70.59 metres. He broke his own previous record, set at Tokyo 2020, not once, but three times.
