Paris 2024 Olympic Games: Maddison Keeney wins silver for Australia in three-meter diving
Maddison Keeney has won a stunning silver medal in the women’s 3m springboard in Paris, the biggest prize of her medal-laden career.
The 28-year-old from Perth, who won bronze in the 2016 synchro springboard event, added a second medal with a stunning performance at the Olympic Aquatics Centre on Friday, beaten only by Chen Yiwen, another Chinese powerhouse.
Keeney, who has had a successful career for ten years, especially with her synchro partner Anabelle Smith, scored 343.10 in her five-dive program, while Chen was a convincing winner with 376.00.
But it was a sign of Keeney’s quality that she beat fellow Chinese diver Chang Yani (318.75) to take the bronze medal.
Keeney, who won three medals at this year’s world championships, had to perfect her final and most difficult dive — a double-twist forward somersault — and barely made a splash as she entered the pool.
She scored 78.20 points, her best performance of the competition, and appeared close to tears as she was embraced by the Australian coaching staff.
It was the seventh Chinese victory in the seven diving finals held in Paris, making them the clear favorites to win eight events of the men’s 10-meter platform event on Saturday.
