It’s a topic that’s causing a lot of division on social media, with many people claiming they would never drink bathroom water, while others insist it tastes the best.

Well, it looks like you better go to the kitchen and get something to drink.

According to Scottish Water, which carried out a number of studies in partnership with WaterSafe, both the room you drink your tap water from and the age of your home matter.

Older homes often have different plumbing systems, which means the water coming out of the tap in the bathroom may be less fresh than the water in the kitchen.

Although technically all homes in the UK have safe drinking water, in some cases water from the bathroom can still cause stomach upset and other health problems.

The pro’s of Victorian plumbing explained that there are two problems when it comes to drinking water from the bathroom.

Firstly, houses in the UK were generally built with lead pipes until the 1970s. However, this practice was slowly phased out after it was discovered that lead water pipes could cause lead poisoning, but some older houses still have them.

Another problem is that the water in your kitchen comes from the mains water supply: a network of pipes that runs throughout the UK and supplies all of our homes with water.

In some houses there is a water tank in the attic. This is usually “no larger than 25 litres, to ensure that the water from the pipes is continuously filtered.”

How often the water is changed depends on how much water you use at home. It can be unsafe to drink for a number of reasons.

“First of all, it’s just not a good idea to drink water that’s been sitting for a while,” the professionals say.

“Generally speaking, water from the water tank is more susceptible to contamination. Therefore, water from the tank only goes to access points that are made for domestic use, such as your bathroom.

“If water is left standing for a while, limescale or other debris can build up in the water tank, which then ends up in your bathroom tap.”

The second reason is that if you have old lead pipes in your home, the water that has been sitting in them for a while can absorb the dangerous lead.

“Over time, this toxic metal dissolves in the water, potentially causing a range of symptoms in grizzly bears.”

Some people couldn’t believe that they weren’t allowed to drink toilet water on the social media site X, formerly Twitter.

One of them said, “Why didn’t anyone tell me that bathroom water is really bad for you? I only drink water.”

“Wait, shouldn’t I just drink water from the bathroom?” wrote another.

Others commented that they hated the taste of it, compared to kitchen and bottled water.

“I will never drink tap water in my life, you are making me sick,” said one.

“The water in the bathroom tastes like mold,” said another.

And another said the thought of drinking water from the bathroom gives them “shivers.”
