Amanda McIntosh, founder of Take My Face Off, can’t believe people are turning a blind eye to a major factor that can make you look years older.

“There’s one thing I don’t hear people talk about: the health of their eyes,” she told The US Sun.

“I don’t just mean the skin around your eyes—I mean your eyes themselves. Eye health is important in general, but just like your teeth, your eyes have a huge impact on how you look.”

She admitted that noticeably bloodshot, red and watery eyes can’t be corrected with makeup alone. Still, there are ways to prevent some of the problems by maintaining healthy habits.

The health of your eyes can deteriorate with age, but thanks to her expertise in beauty and conversations with a real ophthalmologist, she has developed a number of techniques to combat the aging process.

Take it off

“You should remove all your eye makeup before you go to sleep,” she said.

No matter how tired you are, there’s no excuse to be lazy when it comes to your lashes.

This advice is especially important for mascara, because it is so close to the tear ducts.

McIntosh’s beauty brand is known for its mitts, an ultra-soft and effective cleansing alternative to washcloths.

They adapt to your hand or fingers and last for years.

For easy makeup removal, she recommends the brand’s Mitty Detailer, which has a tip she finds perfect for “small areas like the eyes and lash line.”

She said it is safe to use on eyelash extensions and even has a nice effect because it comes in different color variations.

WIN THE ANTI-AGING WAR

Her other anti-aging tips, which should ensure you come out on top in the battle against Father Time, include avoiding applying eyeliner to your inner rim every day.

She wants you to reserve this step for “special occasions.”

She’s also a fan of a find that will make your eyes feel better.

  • Make sure to keep your skin hydrated from within by drinking water and from outside by using a moisturizer.
  • Always wear sunscreen, even when you are not in direct sunlight.
  • Use vitamin C to brighten your skin. Don’t forget to apply it to your neck too.

“A lot of sunscreens make your eyes water, but you don’t want to expose your skin to the sun,” she says.

“I love the Supergroop Bright Eyes Sunscreen Eye Cream. The shade is so sheer that it would probably suit any skin tone,” she added.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s skincare brand’s day cream/concealer for the eyes is her “dream product.”

The beauty expert also called Bausch and Lomb’s Lumify drops a “game-changer.”

She does warn that it can irritate the eyes and that she therefore does not use it too often.

It is best to use them before putting in contact lenses.

Even she is guilty of another mistake that comes with growing older.

“I photograph a lot of people removing their makeup, and we all pull on our faces like rubber bands!” she says.

“We all need to be more careful about cleansing our skin, especially around the eyes.”

TIP YOUR HAT TO THIS TIP

She also never forgot a professional trick that she always keeps in her back pocket.

“I got a tip from an amazing makeup artist: soak your eye makeup remover wipe with liquid and then press it to your closed eye for a few seconds,” she said.

“You want the liquid to really stay on your lashes and lids. If the makeup is still dry, it won’t come off and you’ll rub too hard.”

She also wants you to focus on your nutritional intake and hydration, as these factors play an important role in the health of your skin.

“If you notice that something you eat or drink makes you feel bad, makes you tired or makes your face swell, cut it out of your life,” she said.

In other words, if your body doesn’t handle your food properly, your skin will suffer.

TAKE YOUR TRENDS WITH YOU

McIntosh made it clear that she has no time for trends.

“Let other people be guinea pigs and try everything,” she said.

“So many fads turn out to be disproven later. The more invasive or unusual the new treatment, the longer I wait for more clinical research.

While she admits it’s “tempting” to try the latest brands and products, she also knows this can be damaging to the skin.

“Find the products that work for you and gradually rotate new products. Skin care is a long-term game, and you win by being consistent,” she said.

“If you use moisturizer, sunscreen, and retinol every day (if your skin can tolerate it), you’ll be in top shape.”

She believes that you should build your routine based on proven brands and not change more than one element at a time.

“Sunscreen and AHAs/retinols/vitamin C products are difficult to formulate. I’m not saying you can’t try new ones, but choose carefully,” she said.

“Experiment with eye shadow and lipstick, but don’t wear sunscreen.”
