TikTok user Karli, who posts under @kar.hawkinspyleswrote: “I can’t believe I didn’t know you should thoroughly clean your wooden kitchen utensils.”

In her video she showed that her wooden spoons looked pretty clean after she washed them.

However, she decided to soak them in boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes to see how clean they really were.

After just two minutes, Karli was shocked to see the water changing color and pieces falling off her spoons.

She wrote: “I don’t feel well! I have been using them every day for MONTHS.”

At the end of the soaking she took out the spoons and showed how dirty the water was.

Not only was the color yellowish, there was also an oily layer on the rim of the bowl.

Karli added: “I’m disgusted that I have to do this at least once a month now.

“They look much better now, but I might do a second round.”

Many people were also shocked when they saw the clip.

One of them said, “I just wash them in the dishwasher, so you’re telling me that’s not enough?”

Another added: “Should I even do this to my family’s 15 year old wooden sauce spoons?”

A third commented: “I love eye-opening tips.”

However, some people questioned her methods. One said, “You don’t boil them because that removes the protective layer.”

Karli replied: “I just read a whole article on how to care for them and you are right!

“I think mine needed this, but it says it’s better to wash it with baking soda and vinegar every now and then!”
