People say the baby name mom chooses belongs to a ‘stripper’ and she’ll ‘get bullied’
A mother was criticized for letting her children decide what to name their little sister.
People commented that the unique baby name was more fitting for a stripper.
In a post on Reddit, user Trinitymonkey shared a screenshot of the name announcement on Facebook.
The unnamed woman used children’s letter blocks to spell out the unusual nickname on her baby bump.
She said her daughter’s name would be ‘Chairish’, pronounced ‘Cherish’.
In a response to the original post, the strange spelling of the name was questioned.
“You spell it like this? Chair like a chair you sit on? You’re crazy,” the commenter wrote.
The expectant mother replied that her two children wanted to spell the name that way.
“I like it because it’s different,” the woman added.
Reddit users called the name a Tragedeigh, which is a term for “a first name that is intentionally misspelled or completely made up to seem more unique than it actually is.”
People shared their thoughts about the unique baby name in the comments.
One reader summed up the nickname simply as “stripper name.”
“Like a chair. But not really. Chair-like,” joked another unimpressed Redditor.
“It looks like she let her kids come up with the name,” a third person said.
“This is Adulting 101: NEVER, EVER, EVER let children name things. They’re bad enough at pet names as it is.”
“This sweet girl is going to be bullied to hell for this stupid name,” another commenter noted.
“I understand the appeal of an original name, but if it’s just a spin-off of another name then you’re just an idiot,” wrote one reader.
Are Unique Baby Names Worth It?
You may think that a unique name will make you stand out, but is it really?
Josie Griffiths, deputy editor of Fabulous, talks about the problems she had with her name as a child.
As a child, I wanted nothing more than a personalized keychain with my name on it.
But it wasn’t. The closest I could get were Rosie, Joseph (not so nice for such a little girl) and Joanne.
Josie is short for Josephine, a French first name, and I’ve been in my twenties without ever meeting anyone with the same first name.
When I try to introduce myself to people I get called all sorts of random names like Tracey and Stacey and it can be quite annoying.
Although I’ve met a few Josies in the past year (there are a few around my age), it’s still a much rarer name than most of my friends’ names.
Overall I don’t mind it, at least it’s not crude or spelled weird.
And that means I can get away with ‘doing a Cheryl’ and just calling myself Josie.
I’m getting married this year and some friends are shocked that I’m changing my last name. It’s not considered cool or feminist these days. I explain to them that I’m not that attached to Griffiths because I always just say ‘Hi, I’m Josie’ when I call a friend.
I like being unique and I will definitely try to achieve this when naming my own children.
You have to watch out for the crude names, so after nine years as a lifestyle journalist I will definitely avoid them.
“There should be a screening and licensing process for having children so that these types of people stop reproducing,” said another.
“We are really in the idiocy phase of our society now.”
“Cherish herself is pretty cute. Making it Chairish is just mean,” one Reddit user noted.
“Not that Cherish is a better name, but this is worse,” wrote another reader.
“Wouldn’t Chair-ish be like a stool or something?” one commenter joked.
