Plus-size travel influencer who wants free seats for fat passengers now says Uber and Lyft drivers should be required to bring seat belt extenders for ‘plus-size passengers’

Jaelynn Chaney, better known as Jae Bae, posted a video on TikTok Monday argued that taxi companies should require their drivers to provide seat belt extenders for plus-size passengers.

“Every time I ride a rideshare, I am forced to ride without a seatbelt because there are no seatbelt extenders available. This is a common problem for many plus-size people,” she wrote in the video caption.

She continued, “Not only is this inconvenient, it’s unsafe. It should be mandatory for ride-sharing companies to have at least one seat belt extender per vehicle.”

As the subtitles roll by in the video, Chaney is seen getting into the passenger seat of a sedan as if to illustrate her point.

@jaebaeofficialEvery time I share a ride, I am forced to ride without a seat belt because there are no seat belt extenders available. This is a common problem for many plus size people. This is not only inconvenient, it is also unsafe. It should be mandatory for ride sharing to provide at least one seat belt extender per vehicle. Companies would have to reimburse drivers for the costs, which average around $20. Although I always carry a “universal” seat belt extender, they often don’t work. If every driver were to carry at least one seat belt extender fitted specifically for his or her vehicle, this problem could be solved. Safety for all sizes SHOULD NOT be optional. Chaney wrote that she always carries a universal seat belt extender in her car, but they often don’t work, despite being advertised as “universal.” She probably expected these kinds of extenders to apply to her too.

She added that companies like Uber and Lyft should reimburse drivers for the cost of seat belt extenders. These can be purchased on Amazon for just $12.

“If every driver carried at least one seat belt extender specifically fitted to their vehicle, this problem could be solved. Safety for all sizes MUST NOT be optional,” she concluded.

The vast majority of commenters did not seem understanding and chose to tell her that the problem was with her and not the taxi companies.

“I don’t mean to be rude, but if you need an extension to use the seat belt in a car, that should be a sign that you need to buckle up and lose some weight,” one viewer wrote.
