MUMBAI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be present at NESCO in Goregaon tonight to first pile ceremony for the city’s few crucial infrastructure works, including BMCThe tunneling work on the Mulund Goregaon Link Road (GMLR) and the Construction of Borivali Thane Tunnel By the MMRDA.
The GMLR twin tunnels are each proposed to be 4.7 km long and 45.70 m wide under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. This twin tunnel will be at a depth of 20 to 160 m underground. Both the tunnels will be interconnected at a distance of 300 m each. They will be excavated by a tunnel boring machine (TBM) of about 14.2 m diameter.
It is proposed to provide facilities like advanced lighting system, ventilation system, fire protection system, CCTV, control room etc. in the tunnel.
BMC also indicated that the construction of various utility channels under the tunnels falls within the scope of the project.
“The construction of the tunnels will be carried out without disturbing the flora and fauna of Sanjay Gandhi National Park and the Aarey, Vihar and Tulsi Lake areas. No land acquisition was required in the National Park for the project. The project will reduce carbon emissions by around 22,400 tonnes per year and ultimately help Mumbai residents save on travel time and fuel,” an official said.
