MUMBAI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch, dedicate to the nation and lay foundation stones of projects costing over Rs 29,400 crore at a function at the NESCO Exhibition Centre in Goregaon during his visit to Mumbai on Saturday, officials said. The prime minister will lay the foundation stones of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (MMRDA) Thane-Borivali and the BMC’s Goregaon Mulund Link Road projects, both featuring twin tunnels.
“He will lay the foundation stone for the Central Railway Kalyan Garden and the Gati Shakti MultiModal Cargo Terminal at Turbhe in Navi Mumbai. He will dedicate new platforms to the nation at Lokmanya Tilak terminus and extension of platforms 10 and 11 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus,” an official said on Friday.
A spokesperson for the MMRDA said that the Thane-Borivali Tunnel Project is being constructed at a cost of Rs 16,600 crore. The twin-tube tunnels passing under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park will create a direct link between the Western Express Highway at Borivali and Ghodbunder Road in Thane.
The 11.8-kilometre Borivali Thane Link Road will reduce travel time Thane to Borivali by 12 kilometers and save an hour of travel time, he added.
“The twin tunnels of the Rs 6,300 crore Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project will connect the Western Express Highway at Goregaon with the Eastern Express Highway at Mulund. The project will reduce the travel time from the current 75 minutes to 25 minutes,” a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official said.
A Central Railway official said the renovation of Kalyan Yard will help segregate suburban and long-distance train traffic on the highly congested network in the Mumbai metropolitan region, improving punctuality and operational efficiency.
“The Gati Shakti MultiModal Cargo Terminal will increase the capacity for handling cement and other raw materials while creating employment opportunities in the region. The new platforms at LTT will be able to handle more trains while the expanded platforms 10 and 11 at CSMT will help in running 24-coach trains. Both these developments will increase the number of passengers,” he said.
During his visit to the metropolis, the Prime Minister will also launch the ‘Mukhyamantri Yuva Karya Prashikshan Yojana’, which has a budget of Rs 5,600 crore.
He will visit the secretariat of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS) on Bandra Kurla Complex officials said they are here to open the INS towers.
