‘PM’s indifference is unforgivable’: Priyanka Gandhi on fresh violence in Manipur | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday again criticised Prime Minister Modi for not visiting unrest-ridden Manipur, with party leader Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressing concern over internal security risks.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra alleged that the Prime Minister “has not made any attempt to” violence and the subsequent consequences. In a sharp attack on Prime Minister Modi, Priyanka said the country’s internal security “does not depend on anyone’s wish”.
“Manipur is burning for almost a year and a half. There is daily violence, murdersriot, displacementhouses fires, families are destroyed, lives are ruined, thousands of families are forced to spend their days in refugee camps. The Prime Minister has made no attempt to stop this so far,” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra wrote on X.
The Congress leader further said, “It has never happened that a state of the country is on fire for months like this and no one even talks about it. The internal security of the country does not depend on anyone’s will, it is a vital responsibility. The Prime Minister’s indifference is unpardonable.”

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge also spared no words in criticising the ruling BJP, especially Manipur CM N Biren Singh. He requested the central government to sack him for “exposing his utter incompetence”.
Attacking Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, Kharge said, “In the last 16 months, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji has not spent a single second in Manipur while violence in the state continues unabated and the people are suffering the consequences of Modi-Shah complicity.”
He asked the central government to “take full responsibility for the sensitive security situation”.
Kharge said there should be a “massive crackdown on all types of insurgent groups, with the help of state forces”.

Earlier today, a large group of students took to the streets in Manipur’s Imphal to protest the recent escalation of violence in the state and demanded the resignation of the DGP and the security advisor.
The students condemned the indiscriminate use of drone bombs and missile attacks by extremist groups.
The demonstration came a day after CM Biren Singh along with 18 MLAs met Governor L Acharya amid the recent outbreak of violence.
On September 6, Manipur witnessed a fresh escalation of violence, with deadly rocket attacks claiming one life. The incident was part of a series of erratic clashes and security threats that have plagued the region. However, violence intensified on September 7, with five people killed in Jiribam district.
Security forces responded to these incidents by destroying three militant bunkers in Churachandpur district after rocket attacks were carried out in Bishnupur.
Since May 3, 2023, ethnic violence between the Meitei community in the Imphal Valley and the Kuki-Zo groups in the surrounding hills has left more than 200 dead and thousands homeless.
