Polarization in Manipur also within the government: Retd General | India News – Times of India
GUWAHATI: More than a year after the first wave of violence, Manipur continues to simmer due to deep ethnic polarisation that has spread to government officials and police, easy availability of weapons and persistent misinformation by all stakeholders, said Lt Gen Rana Pratap Kalita (retired), who headed the army’s Eastern Command until nine months ago.
“If these three basic factors are not addressed, the violence will continue,” Lt Gen Kalita told TOI.
China, with its “history of keeping the pot boiling” in India’s northeast, could fuel ethnic unrest in Manipur, the general said. He added that China and neighboring Myanmar were not involved in the initial phase of the conflict but that may no longer be the case.
Manipur gets goods at reasonable prices: Shah
Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday announced the Centre’s decision to provide relief to the common people of unrest-hit Manipur through its Kendriya Police Kalyan Bhandar (KPKB) points of sale, from Tuesday.
“In line with the commitment of PM @narendramodi Ji, MHA is launching an initiative to provide goods to people of Manipur at reasonable prices. Now, Kendriya Police Kalyan Bhandars will be open for common people from September 17, 2024,” Shah said in a post on X. “In addition to the 21 existing Bhandars, 16 new ones will be opened. Of the 16 new centres, eight will be in (Imphal) Valley and the remaining eight will be in the hills,” he added.
KPKB is a welfare initiative launched by MHA in 2006 to provide consumer goods to personnel and family members of serving and retired members of central armed police forcescentral police organisations and state police forces, at rates lower than the open market. There are 119 master bhandars as warehouses and over 1,800 subsidiary bhandars as sales outlets.
The KPKB Central Purchasing Committee successfully negotiates with the companies to get maximum discounts along with consumer offers on products, thus saving the hard-earned money of the KPKB beneficiaries.
