He submitted a care plan for her after she was taken to hospital and after he finished his shift, “that should have been the end of the case,” prosecutor Jamie Baxter said.

But later that morning, while off duty, he used his police cellphone to find her personal details and started calling her several hours after she was taken to hospital.

‘In the days that followed he began asking her out and in the weeks and months that followed his contact with her continued and the result was that the defendant, a serving police officer, began an intimate and ultimately sexual relationship with this vulnerable man . young woman he met in a crisis.

‘Far from the knight in shining armor she initially believed him to be, we suggest she was selected by him for those same vulnerabilities that led him to first meet her and to abuse his position as a police officer on duty to gain her trust, to sleep with her.

“His concern was not her well-being, but rather his own sexual desires,” Mr Baxter said.

After about seven months, she ended their casual relationship, which she described to the jury as “friends with benefits,” and said he would come over for 15 to 20 minutes “for some fun time in bed.”
