Prayagraj protests enter day 4: UPPSC aspirants demand 'one day, one shift' exams
UPPSC protests enter day 4.
NEW DELHI: The protest in Prayagraj entered the fourth straight day on Thursday as the candidates of the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) demanded changes in the schedule of the upcoming exams. Students gathered outside the UPPSC office and broke barricades to voice their concerns.
The protests began on Monday in response to the UPPSC’s decision to conduct exams in multiple shifts, a change from the previous format. Students argued that the shift system gives some students an unfair advantage because the difficulty of the exam can vary from shift to shift.

The police use violence to disrupt the protest

Students claim that police tried to disrupt the protest by threatening students and using violence. “We were caught here, even a disabled girl was abused by the police here. This is how the administration treats the students here, even the differently-abled ones,” Pravesh Kumar, a protesting student, told ANI.
“This is a completely wrong decision. We broke the barricades because we weren’t allowed in. Police officials threatened us not to form groups. They should think that if an aspirant has to come down and press for his demands through a protest, and who is missing in that, the administration or the education department,” said Abhishek Shukla, another student who took part in the protest.
The protests are ongoing, with students vowing to continue their demonstrations until their demands are met by the UPPSC.
Anti-social elements provoking UPPSC students: Prayagraj DCP
Prayagraj Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abhishek Bharti said certain individuals were instigating the protesting students.
According to DCP Bharti, these persons are not students and have a criminal history. “Students are protesting against the state PSC. The students are asked to continue their protest constitutionally and their demands will be submitted to the authorities. Yesterday, public properties were destroyed by anti-social elements and cases have been registered against them. They are not students but antisocial elements, with a history of criminal cases. Two of these antisocial elements are part of the protests and are provoking the students. More of them are being identified and interrogated,” the DCP said.
The DCP also mentioned that two persons were arrested for vandalizing public property during the protests.

Protests lead to a political debate
Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav criticized the state government and said, “The rise of students will be the downfall of the BJP. Release chalaya lathi-danda, naukri nahi jinka agenda (those who used lathicharge have no jobs in their calendar).”
Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Keshav Maurya called for a quick solution and urged officials to listen to the students and address their concerns quickly.
