President Murmu unveils commemorative coin to mark 75 years of the constitution
NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday inaugurated the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of India as “Samvidhan Diwasat the Old Parliament Building, officially known as Samvidhan Sadan. On this occasion, she issued a commemorative coin and a postage stamp dedicated to the milestone.
She also unveiled the first Sanskrit copy of the Constitution and its Maithili version.
To mark the event, President Murmu also released two books titled “Making of the Constitution of India: A Glimpse” and “Making of the Constitution of India & Its Glorious Journey.” During her speech, she reflected on the adoption of the Constitution 75 years ago, calling it a “historic moment.”
“Our Constitution is a living and progressive document. Through this, we have achieved the goals of social justice and inclusive development,” she said. She also highlighted the contributions of the fifteen female members of the Constituent Assembly in shaping the country’s foundational text.
The President also urged all Indians to integrate constitutional ideals into their conduct and fulfill their fundamental duties, and “work towards achieving the national goal of a developed India by 2047.”
Highlighting the recent developments, President Murmu said, “The Women Retention Act has ushered in a new era of women empowerment in our democracy.”
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also congratulated his countrymen on Constitution Day, saying the Constitution is a testament to years of dedication, sacrifice, creativity, resilience and the collective wisdom of the people.
“I congratulate millions of Indians who are celebrating Constitution Day today. 75 years ago, on this day, our Constitution was codified. Today, under the leadership of the President, the entire country jointly expresses gratitude to the Constitution. Today, millions of fellow countrymen will take a pledge to move the country forward by reciting the preamble of the Constitution. With the inspiration of Prime Minister Modi, we took the historic decision in 2015 to celebrate November 26 as Constitution Day is the culmination of years of penance, sacrifice, ingenuity, strength and prowess of our people. In this central hall, after about three years of hard work, they drafted a constitution that ties together the country’s geographical and social diversity in one thread. Birla said.
The event marks the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949. The Constitution officially came into effect on January 26, 1950.
