‘President rules through back door…’: AAP minister accuses BJP of plotting to topple Delhi govt – Times of India
NEW DELHI: Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi Minister Atishi accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of trying to topple the Kejriwal government by imposing presidential power in the capital.
Atishi’s accusation came after the President’s Office sent the BJP’s claims of a “constitutional crisis” in Delhi to the Home Ministry for review.
Speaking to PTI, Atishi alleged that the BJP is using indirect means to topple the popular AAP government. Referring to events in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Manipur, Atishi accused the BJP of toppling governments in the country through ‘Operation Lotus’.
“They also tried Operation Lotus in Delhi to topple the government by smuggling the AAP MLAs, but it failed. Now they are conspiring to impose President’s Rule through the backdoor to topple the popular Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi,” she alleged.
Atishi said the people of Delhi “love” Kejriwal because he provides good schools, hospitals, electric buses, free bus rides for women and free pilgrimages for the elderly.
Responding to these allegations, Vijender Gupta, leader of the BJP opposition in the Delhi Assembly, alleged that the city’s governance was stalled.
Gupta blamed the “paralysis of governance” in Delhi on Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as he has been in judicial custody since his arrest on March 21 in the excise policy case..
On Monday, Delhi’s LoP issued a statement accusing the AAP government of violating the Constitution by not setting up a sixth Delhi Finance Commission and not taking action on the CAG report.
A delegation of BJP MPs met President Murmu on Friday and submitted a memorandum seeking her “urgent intervention” in the “constitutional crisis plaguing Delhi” triggered by the jailing of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
“The President has taken cognizance of the memorandum and forwarded it to the Minister of Home Affairs for appropriate attention,” Gupta said, sharing a letter from the President’s Secretariat.
Gupta said he has urged the home minister to take “immediate and appropriate action” in the matter.
“Kejriwal has refused to step down, creating an unprecedented situation that has led to a complete breakdown of governance in Delhi. Critical administrative decisions are being delayed and essential services are being severely affected, directly impacting the lives of the citizens of Delhi,” he said.
Atishi warned that the people of Delhi will react strongly if the Kejriwal government falls. He predicted that the BJP would be completely wiped out in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
She said, “The BJP will lose even the eight seats it has now and will be reduced to zero in the coming state assembly elections, while the AAP will win all the 70 seats.”
The Delhi state assembly elections are scheduled for early next year.
