Indira Gandhi, born on November 19, 1917, remains a major figure in the world Indian politics. She was the country’s third Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination on October 31, 1984.
She has the distinction of being India’s first and only woman Prime Minister to date, and has left a lasting legacy in Indian governance and the Congress Party.
Indira, the daughter of the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, succeeded him as a prominent political leader. After her assassination, her son Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister.
Indira Gandhi is the second longest-serving Prime Minister in Indian history after her father, with a total term of 15 years and 350 days.
