The Queen’s 32-year-old granddaughter chose a recycled navy blue dress from Palmer//Harding when visiting the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital, whose patroness she is.

Eugenie, daughter of Prince Andrew, the Duke of York and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, opened the charity garden and said it “provides patients with nature and the great outdoors at a time when they need it most” in a message to Instagram

The occasion undoubtedly had special significance for Eugenie, as she underwent surgery there to correct scoliosis – curvature of the spine – when she was only 12 years old.

For her outing, Eugenie opted for a navy blue crew-neck dress with elbow-length sleeves finished with turned-up flared cuffs.

WHAT IS SCOLIOSIS?

Scoliosis is the sideways curvature of the spine, which can cause uneven shoulders and lead to clothes that fit poorly.

The condition is believed to affect up to 3% of people in the US and UK and usually develops during a growth spurt just before puberty.

Treatment is not always necessary for cases of mild scoliosis. However, braces can help prevent the curve from worsening as patients age.

If the scoliosis progresses rapidly in a young child, rods may be inserted that straighten the spine and adjust in length as the patient grows.

In severe cases, surgery may be required, which can reduce the amount of space in the chest and make it difficult for the lungs to function.

The most common procedure is called a spinal fusion, which is major surgery that helps correct the curve, de NHS say. It can take up to seven hours.

It involves connecting two or more bones in the vertebrae so that they cannot move independently. Metal rods or screws keep the spine straight.

Scoliosis can be caused by cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy, birth defects, injuries, or infections. However, the cause is often unknown.

Eugenie was diagnosed with scoliosis and underwent corrective surgery at just 12 years old, with a pair of 8-inch titanium rods inserted next to her spine to repair it due to a curve.

The surgery resulted in a prominent scar, which Eugenie wore with pride and chose a backless dress for her wedding to Jack Brooksbank in October 2018.

In an interview before the wedding, the princess said, “I think you can change beauty, and you can show people your scars and I think it’s really special to stand up for that.”

The visit follows an article published today in The Spectator, in which Eugenie paid tribute to her beloved “Grandma” on the occasion of her 70th anniversary.

She said she hoped her one-year-old son August would grow into the “patience, her composure and her kindness of the Queen, while always being able to laugh at himself and keep a twinkle in his eye.”

She described the country’s longest-reigning monarch as someone who has transcended time and “has been a constant pillar of strength for so many.”

Reflecting on her ‘special little family’ with the arrival of August, who was born last February, Eugenie said: ‘I think of my grandmother and what she has stood for, for so many people and for our family during these 70 years.

“I wish Augie had her patience, her composure, and her kindness, while always smiling at himself and keeping a twinkle in his eye.”

Eugenie and her sister Beatrice will not appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace in Trooping The Color tomorrow after the Queen was forced to shave the numbers to ‘those members of the Royal Family who are currently performing official public duties on behalf of the Queen’.

However, expectations have been raised for her great-grandchildren Louis, Charlotte and George and the husband of Princess Anne.

However, it is likely that Eugenie will join the family on Friday at the Queen’s service at St Paul’s, along with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex who are flying over from California with their two children.

And on Sunday, she will be spotted again at one of the Great Anniversary Lunches with her sister Princess Beatrice.
