PS6? Xbox series Y? It is way too early to talk about the next generation of consoles-this is why

Both Microsoft And Sony have confirmed that they are working on games consoles of the next generation, with 2027 even tipped to be the potential launch date For a potential PlayStation 6 Or new Xbox. But I am here to crush that hype.
While 2027 is useful for the usual new consolecycling, which tends to be the seven years – the PlayStation 5 And Xbox series X (and s) both launched in November 2020, so that time expired in 2027 – I think it is much too early to start thinking about the following gene consoles (unless you look at a hook Nintendo Switch 2 Restock).
I was lucky to put both the current-gene PlayStation and Xbox flagship consoles to the test when they launched. And both are excellent pieces of hardware; The Series X is the ultimate expression of Xbox, while the PS5 offered a neat package of innovations and the immersion ranges Dualsense -controller.
But the disruption of the COVID-19 Pandemie not only made it difficult to get one of the consoles in the neighborhood of the launch, but also saw enormous delays for games. This had the Domino effect that more games were cross-generation than I usually expected.
Although that is not a bad thing, especially because I would rather enjoy playing games like God of war And The Last of Us Part 2 With 60 frames per second (FPS) I felt that it didn’t really give the right console atmosphere of the next generation that I had hoped for.
And now, five years in the generation and Microsoft has already started talking about the next generation of hardware, with Xbox President Sarah Bond announced that the Gaming Division has formed a partnership with AMD for future hardware. And Sony confirmed that it is working on new PlayStation hardware of the next generation, but stopped mentioning it PS6.
Too fast?
None of this is surprising, because there will of course be a new console generation; That is unless Microsoft really does hardware and enters Xbox Cloud GamingBut that is another subject of discussion. However, I think it is much too early for even the most hardcore of gamers to think too much about what the next step is for Xbox and PlayStation Hardware.
The core of this is, I think, we really started getting the right ‘next gene’ games in 2022, perhaps even 2023 to the term ‘next-gene’ started to feel irrelevant. Perhaps ‘Current gene’ was more suitable at the time.
Now I even get that on the PS5 ProPlayers may still have to make a form of a choice between the fastest frame reasons or the Crispest images, instead of just having 4k 60 fps (I have to add that the PS5 Pro offers a number of excellent medium -sized options, such as such as A graphic mode of 40 fps high quality in Horizon Forbidden WestAnd PSSR offers a number of smart upsampling for games).
So there is potentially an argument for new hardware to finally deliver the Ultra-High Definition and fast frame speed combination that has always felt like an unnecessary promise.
Of course, PC gamers with deep pockets can already get this with a high-end machine, or they get the most out of it Nvidia‘s DLSS Tech to get fast frame reasons with smart-mixed resolutions.
If someone with a very powerful gaming pcI love to start every game in principle, to raise everything and enjoy fast frames speeds at a monitor with a high refresh rate. But that is a bit of a niche proposition, and I don’t think it’s still a catalyst for new console hardware.
My umbrella feeling is that the current Xbox and PlayStation generation is really three years old in Gaming. I would like to see more out of the current hardware pumped before I dive into the next place, because I think developers have more to get from these machines.
I have previously made this argument partially with regard to the PS5 ProWhich I think is great, but maybe a little underwhelming. What I find more impressive is that consoles work to deliver impressive performance or visuals, because developers really learn to optimize for their silicon mountain.
To take The last of us on the PS3 – That was a seriously impressive looking game that got so much from very mature hardware. I would say the same was true for Halo 4 on the Xbox 360.
Although those consoles had a different chip architecture than their predecessors, I think that the technical know-how of obtaining aging hardware may have had a positive domino effect on developing games for the PS4 And Xbox One.
In view of those in the last generation and the consoles of this generation AMD Chip-architecture, and that is certainly to continue with the next generation, I think it will be learning to push the current hardware as hard as possible, a positive knock-on effect for the following gene consoles in terms of extracting more performance from the offset, but also to open new game experiences with a concept of extra performance.
Beyond the frame speeds
Although we have had some very graphically impressive games, such as Horizon Forbidden West And Gran Turismo 7 on ps5, and Forza Horizon 5 On Xbox Series X I don’t feel that they vary enormously from their predecessors. So I’m still waiting for a game to really be surprised – Fable 4 And GTA 6 Both have attracted my attention, but they are postponed until next year.
Pass by The recent Witcher 4 Tech -demoWhat looked great, but ran at 60 FPS on PS5 hardware, there is apparently a lot of untougested promise in the current console hardware, especially with what Unreal Engine 5 has to offer.
Likewise I still think The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Looks fantastic, especially after his improved release on the current-gene consoles. And although I quickly play frame speed with all the bells and whistles on my PC, I wonder if we have achieved a little ‘peak images’. Of course, things can become sharper, sharper and smoother, but will we ever see the big generation jump as I used to see in the early 2000s? Probably not.

So I am worried that with a new consoleration now demonstrably on the horizon, we even the Best Games Consoles Go the way of smartphones and become almost incremental generation-to-generation. I don’t want that.
I want new consoles to offer the right step changes in gaming. Where once graphic loyalty that was, how about something new?
The world and its technological dog are over AI, so what about seeing games consoles that can really support an advanced character AI that offer unique player experiences with every new Playthrough, or expand the scope of games.
Or maybe we see new control schedules that really make gaming accessible to everyone; as many as The Nintendo Switch 2 is perhaps a cool piece of hardware, my colleague Rob Dwiar can’t use itAnd that seems rather restrictive in the year 2025.
As games have evolved, they open more interesting experiences and interactions – when we escape the established molds of Call of Duty” Assassin’s CreedAnd so on – and I think hardware could and may have to follow.
So I hope that we do not let Hype push a new consolerification too quickly, and instead the current hardware is pushed to the maximum, while smarter people than I think of new technology that brings gaming to a new level.
