Pubs ‘could axe punters’ favourite draught beers for 0% pints’ under ‘nanny state’ plans to make each boozer offer at least one low or no-alcohol brew on tap

Pubs could do away with some of the nation’s favorite draft beers for 0% pints, under new plans that will see every pub offer non-alcoholic pints on tap.

The measures aimed at reducing alcohol consumption would see pubs serve at least one low or non-alcoholic brew at the bar.

Pub meals high in salt, fat and sugar, such as burgers or fish and chips, could also be dealt with harshly if the measures discussed in Westminster are introduced.

Trade body UKHospitality has criticized the ‘nanny state’ plans, arguing they would have a negative impact on smaller pubs.

Chief executive Kate Nicholls told the Sun: ‘If we have a Labor government as expected, there is a greater chance that there will be a major public health agenda and it is more likely to be influenced by a number of non-governmental organisations, including the non- alcohol lobby.’

She told a conference in London: ‘The last Labor government put forward a lot of measures that could be considered nanny state measures.’

Ms Nicholls has said there is currently unrest in the pub industry over increased interference in the way they run their businesses.

It comes as the shocking scale of Britain’s pub crisis was revealed earlier this year, with 29 drinking establishments closing every week and the buildings being turned into supermarkets, DIY stores, takeaways and mosques.

According to the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), scores of pubs are closing every week due to skyrocketing energy costs and punters are left with less cash, devastating local areas.

The number of long-term closures has almost doubled: 500 were reported last year, compared to 251 in 2021.

MailOnline has contacted the Labor Party for comment.
