Puffy Lux Mattress Review | Reasons to Buy/NOT to Buy

Our verdict

Best for: Combination sleeping cabin Side sleeper

If you like soft beds that make you feel like you’re sleeping on a marshmallow, then the Puffy Lux might just be the bed for you. The soft and fluffy feel is its unique selling point. Many of us want our beds to be as soft as possible, and the Lux is made for those who can’t get enough of extra soft mattresses. The top of the mattress has clouds stitched into the cover, and rightly so.

Of course, people have different preferences, so not everyone will have a soft mattress. So the Puffy Lux isn’t for everyone. It’s the right choice for the cozy mattress lover who enjoys a good memory foam feel to nestle into. Below is my full Puffy Lux mattress review and the lowdown on whether I think it’s worth the money.

First impressions of the Puffy Lux mattress

The Puffy logo is a cloud, and clouds are scattered across the cover of the Puffy Lux mattress, so it’s safe to say I had high hopes for the softness of this mattress. I quickly found out that it doesn’t just talk the talk, it does what it says. This mattress is like a giant marshmallow. It’s clearly a memory foam mattress, but it’s not super dense. It feels soft and gently presses against your body, hugging your curves. You can also tell it’s a hybrid mattress (the innersprings are in the bottom layer) by how firm and supportive it feels. My back tends to sink into the bed a little when I sleep on my back or stomach, so I find it most comfortable sleeping on my side.

Puffy Lux firmness and feel

How firm is the Puffy Lux mattress?

After testing and laying on this mattress, I would rate it slightly softer than medium; between medium and medium-soft, or a 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale. You sink into the mattress more than you sit on it, and it relieves pressure around your curves and joints. It’s not the best at keeping my back from sinking into the mattress, but it would be more supportive for someone under 150 pounds.

How does the Puffy Lux mattress feel?

Puffy wasn’t shy about the memory foam in this mattress and it’s very present, but it’s more light and airy than dense. Some memory foams take a few seconds to settle into your body and even feel firm at first, but not the Puffy Lux. The soft memory foam immediately molds to my body and I slowly sink into the comfort layer of the bed. It really gives you that “ahhhh” feeling, like you’re being hugged by a teddy bear.

Puffy Lux mattress construction

If you were to cut this mattress open, you would see four different layers stacked on top of each other. Since I don’t recommend destroying your mattress to look inside, I’ll give you a rundown of the bed’s 12-inch construction:

1. A 7-inch system of pocket springs that Puffy calls Contour Adapt springs. It’s surrounded by dense foam along the perimeter to reinforce the edges, so they feel strong and sturdy when you sleep on the edge of your bed.

2. Climate Comfort foam acts as a transition layer to form a barrier between the coils and the various foams above. It gets its name from its moisture-resistant properties, as it wicks away moisture.

3. Plush Dual Cloud foam is a comfortable foam that gives the bed a cozy cloud feeling.

4The cooling Cloud foam ensures that the mattress feels soft like memory foam, which conforms to your curves.

5. A hypoallergenic cover that Puffy calls stain resistant. I wouldn’t go out of my way to test that claim, but it is machine washable in case you need to clean something.

Puffy Lux mattress performance

Motion isolation

Even though the Puffy Lux is a hybrid mattress with coils, it does a great job of dampening movement across the mattress. I give credit to the multiple layers of memory foam stacked on top, which absorb movement like a pro. If you share a mattress with a partner, this will help prevent you from being disturbed if they move around in the middle of the night.

Edge support

Not only does the Puffy Lux feature steel coils that help maintain the integrity of the bed’s support system, but it also features dense, firm foam for double reinforcement. If you’re forced to move to the edge of your mattress because your partner is a kicker or a bed hog, you won’t feel like you’re rolling off the side.

Temperature

Don’t be fooled by the name of this bed’s Cooling Cloud foam. It won’t feel very cool to the touch. On the other hand, it won’t warm you up either. Instead, I find the Puffy Lux to be temperature-neutral; the temperature of your room, your pajamas, the region you live in, and whether or not you sleep with a partner likely play a bigger role in how warm you get while you sleep.

Who is the Puffy Lux mattress suitable for?

A soft firmness level is more suitable for certain sleeping positions than others, and it is important to pay attention to your most dominant position when determining whether a mattress is right for you. Your body type also plays a role in how suitable a mattress will be.

Position

The Puffy Lux mattress is wonderfully soft and comfortable to relieve the hip and shoulder joints of side sleepers.

Zooey Liao/CNET

Soft mattresses are best for side sleepers because they provide enough space for your shoulders and hips to push into the layers, providing more pressure relief and comfort. Beds that feel soft may not provide enough support to keep a stomach or back sleeper’s spine in a straight line, which can lead to back pain when you wake up in the morning. Unless you weigh less than 150 pounds, back and stomach sleepers will want to consider a firm mattress.

Combination sleepers can sleep well on this mattress, as long as their primary sleeping position is not on their back and stomach.

Body type

Hybrid mattresses like Puffy are suitable for all body types. It depends on how much support you are looking for.

Folks over 150 pounds will appreciate the support the Puffy Lux provides with its 7-inch pocketed coil system, while petite body types may want to take it or skip a hybrid depending on whether or not they want that extra support. I also think it’s worth a look for someone who’s a strict side sleeper who wants a really plush mattress.

I have good news and bad news. The bad news: The Puffy Lux mattress is a bit expensive at MSRP; a queen is $2,849. The good news is that Puffy often has sales, so you can walk away with a good deal. If you shop today, you can take advantage of an extended Presidents Day sale that’s going on right now.

Trial period, warranty, shipping

You won’t find Puffy in stores, so you’ll have to buy Puffy mattresses from the company’s website. Puffy tries to sweeten the deal with a nice trial period, a generous warranty policy, and free shipping.

You will receive free shipping to your doorstep and your mattress will be delivered rolled up in a cardboard box. It will smell a little bit like a new car when you unpack it. The smell will disappear after a day or two.

You get 101 nights to test your bed and a lifetime guarantee if you decide to keep your Puffy Lux. This is pretty impressive and shows that Puffy is confident in the integrity of its product.

Final verdict

As a stomach sleeper, the Puffy Lux is a little too soft for me to keep my spine properly aligned. If you’re a side sleeper or a combination sleeper who likes to sleep on your side, this mattress is made for you. The soft, airy, and fluffy foams gently hug your body and curves, and it’s really nice if you’re a sleeper who can’t get enough of memory foam. It’s a little pricey, so I might not recommend it for budget shoppers, but it’s a good choice for those with the extra income to splurge on a new bed.

The Puffy Lux might be right for you because:

  • A lifetime warranty on a mattress is impressive and demonstrates high-quality construction.
  • The soft feel is perfect for side sleepers and combination sleepers.
  • Thanks to its hybrid construction, it is suitable for all body types.
  • Extra foam reinforcements around the edge provide extra strength on the sides (a plus for couples).
  • The comfortable, light and airy memory foam feels comfortable.
  • You want a mattress that is easy to clean and has a machine washable cover.

You may not like the Puffy Lux if:

  • You want a firm mattress (for example because you suffer from back pain or sleep on your back or stomach).
  • You don’t like the feel of memory foam.
  • You have a limited budget.

Other mattresses from Puffy

Puffy Royal Hybrid: The Royal Hybrid mattress is one of Puffy’s most luxurious offerings. It has a responsive memory foam feel that strikes a nice balance between the sink-in quality of foam without being too dense. It sits between a medium and medium-soft on our firmness scale, making it the best option for side sleepers.

How does the Puffy Lux mattress compare to other mattresses?

Brooklyn Bedding Signature vs. Puffy Lux: The Brooklyn Bedding Signature is another popular hybrid mattress. Instead of one firmness level, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature comes in three firmness levels. The softest option is around medium-soft, which is slightly softer than the Puffy Lux.

Helix Sunset Luxe vs. Puffy Lux: The Helix Sunset Luxe mattress is another soft bed we tested. It’s also extremely soft and great for side sleepers, though the main difference is how the mattress feels. Instead of the memory foam feel you get from Puffy, the Helix Sunset Luxe has a pillow-top feel.

The Puffy Lux mattress is a hybrid mattress with durable pocket springs and multiple layers of memory foam.

We rate the Puffy Lux mattress as medium-soft, or a three on our firmness scale. That means it’s best for strict side sleepers who need a soft mattress with lots of pressure relief. Back and stomach sleepers may find this mattress too soft for their needs.

The average lifespan of a mattress is about eight years. However, how you care for your bed will affect how long you can live with it. Puffy offers a lifetime warranty on its mattresses.
