Puri Rath Yatra: Lord Balabhadra idol falls on servants, 9 injured | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: At least nine servants of the Jagannath Temple were injured when the idol of Lord Balabhadra accidentally fell on them during the Rath Yatra festival in Pure on Tuesday.
The incident took place when the chariot idol was being transported to a temple, an official told news agency PTI.
According to Puri Revenue Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain, five of the nine injured have been admitted to hospital while the remaining four have minor injuries.
The accident took place during the ‘Pahandi’ ritual, where the heavy wooden image of Lord Balabhadra’s chariot is lowered to the Gundicha TempleIt was reported that those responsible for carrying the statuette lost control of it during the process.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed concern over the incident and directed Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan to immediately visit the site and take necessary action.
The Puri Jagannath Temple comes under the jurisdiction of the law department of the state government.
The Prime Minister also wished a speedy recovery to the injured servants.
After the accident, the ritual of the sister deities – Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra and Lord Balabhadra – was resumed and all the idols were successfully transported inside the Gundicha temple.
The deities remain in the Gundicha temple till the ‘Bahuda Jatra’ (the return journey festival), which is scheduled for July 15.
