Quad, UNGA, bilateral ties: Govt gives details of PM’s US itinerary | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: The government on Tuesday announced Prime Minister Modi’s three-day visit to the US, starting with his participation in the 4th Quad top who will receive US President Joe Biden in Delaware on September 21. He will also UN General Assembly Summit of the future on September 23 in New York, and have several bilateral meetings on the sidelines before returning to India.
During his stay in New York, Modi will deliver a speech to the Indian community on September 22 and interact with CEOs of leading US companies to promote collaboration between the two countries in the “advanced fields of AI, quantum computing, semiconductors and biotechnology”.
The government said in a statement that Modi is also expected to hold consultations with thought leaders and other stakeholders active in the India-US bilateral trade landscape.
While India was keen on hosting the Quad Summit on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, the US proposed to hold it in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden’s hometown. Following the request, India agreed to host the next Quad Summit in 2025. This will also pave the way for an early visit of the next US president to India.
At the Wilmington summit, leaders will review the progress made by the Quad bloc over the past year and set the agenda for the year ahead to help the countries of the Indo-Pacific region in achieving their development goals and aspirations, the Indian announcement said.
The last Quad Summit took place in Hiroshima in May 2023, on the sidelines of the G7 summit. In addition to the focus on the Indo-Pacific, discussions are expected on a range of issues, including efforts to ensure supply chain security and resilience, and the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. At the Hiroshima summit, leaders reiterated Modi’s remark that this was not an era of war and sought a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in accordance with the UN Charter.
Modi will also address the Summit of the Future at the UNGA during his visit. Many world leaders are expected to participate in the summit whose theme is ‘Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow’. “On the sidelines of the summit, the PM would hold bilateral meetings with various world leaders and discuss issues of mutual interest,” the government said.
