Denmark has the oldest prevailing monarchy in Europe, which refers to the Viking king Gorm De Oude, who died in 958. Although Margrethe is head of state, the Danish constitution has strictly excluded its involvement in party politics.
Margrethe was born a week after Nazi Germany invaded Denmark. The occupation meant that the little princess became a symbol of hope for the Danes.
She climbed the throne on January 15, 1972, after the death of her father.
But although she was his oldest child, she only became heir in 1953, when the Constitution of Denmark was changed to allow women to inherit the throne.
That followed a referendum in which more than 85 percent of the participants voted to allow female follow -up.
She was married in 1967 to a Frenchman, Henri Marie Jean André de Laborde de Monpezat, later styled as Prince Henrik. They had two sons, Prince Frederick and Prince Joachim.
Although she enjoyed a long marriage of 50 years, her relationship with Henrik was plagued by controversy. Henrik surprised Danes by saying that he had the feeling that he had pushed aside by his wife in his own house.
Prince Henrik died in 2018 at the age of 83.
On the day she became prince, she appeared on the balcony of the Christenborg Palace of Denmark and promised her loyalty to the nation.
